THE ORIGIN STORY
Auks farm is a tribute to the black and white flightless bird ‘The Great Auk’ that became extinct in the mid 19th century, driven extinct by human cruelty and carelessness.
The death of the last ‘Great Auk ‘ has been compared to the final punctuation mark in a book, or the final curtain of a play. The Great Auk was a peaceful colonial and social bird that relied on a large numbers of its kind to be successful. They walked slowly with short steps in a straight line. This species had no innate fear of human beings, and their flightlessness and awkwardness on land compounded their vulnerability.
We think the tale of the last Great Auk deserves to be told. It doesn’t really matter where she lived or where she came from. Only by learning the story, can we learn how and why species become extinct.
We love the story of the Great Auks and when it came to naming our farm it felt so right. We at Auks farm are in a way like this bird making tiny steps in this domain, peaceful, friendly black and white.
Auks farm was a dream of our father, Late Mr. KB Subba and his retirement plan when he bought the farmland but unfortunately he passed away before realising his dreams in Oct 2014. Auks Farm was born on 19th December, 2014.
‘Auks’ also comprises of the initials of the four family members – son Ashish, mother Usha, late Mr. KB Subba himself and his daughter Sushmita.
